The Meaning behind the spade

how it all started

Hi there, my name is Jane Campbell, the founder of Ace of Spades Apparel, a daughter, sister, loving dog mom, avid coffee drinker, a not so average card player, and professional soccer player for the Houston Dash. Every morning before school, my mom and I would play the card game Gin. Whenever I won in Gin with the Ace of Spades in my hand, I felt like I had the best cards one could have. As I grew older, I was introduced to other card games such as, War, Speed, Solitaire, and more. What was the one thing almost all of the card games had in common? The Ace of Spades was the most powerful card in the deck.

Fast-forward to 2017 where I both graduated from Stanford University and was drafted 15th overall in the NWSL. As I continued my soccer journey at the professional level, I always remembered the lessons I learned from simply playing cards. I’ve never been one to talk about my insecurities, especially on the field and in times of pressure and stress. I realized whenever I was faced with an inevitable phase of adversity, I always remembered playing cards. The power of the Ace of Spades.

Whenever I get a chance to step on the field, I want to perform to the best of my ability and I want my teammates to know I am giving my very best. Even though everyone on the outside may not know exactly what I bring to the table, I want my team to know they have the Ace of Spades in their hand. I realized this type of mindset helped me off the field, whether I am coaching, giving a talk to a college team, or speaking with my family. To me, the most important piece to having confidence in any challenge or performance is to know your power and your abilities to succeed because no one can take that from you.

This is where my idea to create Ace of Spades Apparel came from. People may not know the cards you hold, but you will always know if you hold the most powerful card in the deck and that card is you. So wear your gear with pride, always aim to be the best version of you, and most importantly, be the most powerful card in the deck: the Ace of Spades.
